A portrait miniature of a lady called, Mrs Thomas Beckwith née Matthews, wearing a white dress with frilled trim and fichu, her hair powdered and secured with a white bandeau.
Watercolour on ivory, signed on the obverse, G F Joseph, gold frame with blue glass border, the reverse glazed to reveal gold monogram, ‘SB’ over a blue glass ground, within a surround of plaited hair.

Notes…Sarah Matthews married Thomas Beckwith in 1794 at St. Thomas’ church in Liverpool. The couple had seven children, all christened at St Thomas’ church: John (b. 1795), Thomas (b. 1799), William (b. 1800), Sarah (b. 1801), Mary (b. 1803), Susannah (b. 1804) and Eliza (b. 1806). Beckwith Street in Liverpool is likely to have been named after this family of mercers and drapers.
